Spotify just launched a messaging feature on its platform, and it’s left users confused.
The music streaming giant decided to build a place for you to share your music, podcasts, and audiobooks with friends and family inside the music app. The new feature is designed to streamline how you share your favourite tracks, playlists, and podcast episodes.
Instead of closing Spotify and opening WhatsApp or iMessage to text a recommendation to a friend, you’re able to send it all within the same app.
But the new functionality has left some Spotify subscribers confused.
One user posted on X: “I just want to listen to my music in peace. I have no interest in chatting with my friends. I think there are enough platforms to already do that. let something be as it is.”

Some users also think this new update is a missed opportunity to make the messaging feature more tailored to meeting new friends who enjoy the same type of music.
One user wrote, “You should be able to have a listening room where u join friends’ music stream and (text) chat. Just a bunch of missed opps to make it FUN!”
They need to add a feature where it will tell you if other people in your area are listening to the same song, album, or artist as you. Could be a great way to make friends https://t.co/fGuMV5eIdU

However, Spotify says it only introduced the messaging feature because users requested it.
In a press release, Spotify said, “Spotify users have told us they want a dedicated space within the app to share songs, podcasts, or audiobooks they’re excited about with friends and family, and an easy way to keep track of recommendations.
“Our goal is to give users what they want and make those moments of connection more seamless and streamlined in the Spotify app.”
So, how does this new feature work?
Spotify Messages are one-on-one chats to specifically share content from inside the Spotify app. You can also react to songs, podcasts, and albums shared with you using text messages and emojis.
You are also in control of who sends you messages. You have the choice to accept or reject message requests from friends and family. All messages are also protected with industry-standard end-to-end encryption, so your data is protected.
Want to give it a go? To send a message on Spotify, tap the share icon on a song, podcast, or audiobook while it’s playing, select a friend, and then hit send.
This isn’t the first time Spotify has released a messaging feature on its platform. The platform had the functionality to send messages between subscribers years ago, before it was removed in 2017 due to low engagement.
Some users also seem to be excited to see its return. One wrote, “I remember I was like 25 when it was first removed I was sad, no way they’re bringing it back.”

With several hundred thousand new subscribers since the last time messages were available inside Spotify, this new messaging feature may have a better success rate than its previous one.
